I wondered about what he had said. There was a little part of me that felt proud to be a working man and sorry that he seemed to be a homeless drunkard. But another part of me felt that the old man had sensed my impatience and was being a better man than I. It made me think about class, manners, and respect for the elderly— even if the elderly person in question looks drunk and smells bad. I mean, it wouldn’t have hurt me to insist that he go first. It wouldn’t have hurt me not to run up to the train car doors like it was so important that I board right then and there. There are moments when “working man” is just another term for an immature moneymaker who’s rushing around like his life is more important than everything else around him. I don’t want to be that guy. And that’s what they old hobo taught me today on the train platform.

I have nothing against people; it’s just crowds in tight spaces I don’t like. Come on, Valley Metro, add more streetcars to the rails! It shouldn’t still be "standing room only" a week after the Grand Opening and three days into charging fares for passage.

I think Metro is a boon to the Valley. I want to see it succeed; I’m only publicly criticizing it in the hope of putting the heat on Valley Metro to make it an attractive alternative to driving.

P.S. There were only two cars in this train. Each station can accommodate trains with up to three cars. With ridership like this, you’d think they could run the trains with three cars.

Today, I accomplished something I’ve been thinking about doing for at least five years now: I taught a workshop to sign language interpreters. I have my colleague Joy Marks at the Desert Valleys Regional Cooperative to thank not only for taking this photo but for providing the logistical assistance, facilities, and equipment I needed to present this workshop. Her generosity on so many levels was invaluable.

For my part, it seems that all my hard work, research, and preparation paid off. The students had fun, learned a lot, and scored my presentation highly. Yay!
