Just thought of a cultural interpretation for a Deaf client who says someone dear to them is “Deaf!”: “S/he’s Deaf like me. We identify with each other.”

Oh, yes! This is definitely a cultural identifier and has little or nothing to do with medical or audiologic status. I think it is in Padden & Humphries second “Deaf in America” book that they talk about the different meaning of “Hard of Hearing”. For a Deaf person to say that someone is “Very Hard of Hearing” does *not* mean that the person hears poorly. It means that “he or she is very little like me” and so may mean that the “very Hard of Hearing” person actually hears fairly well.
